The Joint South London Waste Plan (Development Plan Document) consultation for the Issues and Options Report began on the 19th September 2008 and runs until the 31st October. The boroughs of Croydon, Kingston, Merton and Sutton are working together to prepare a Joint Waste Development Plan Document, known as the South London Waste Plan. The South London Waste Plan is the councils’ response to European, UK and regional policies and targets to manage waste more sustainably. The key role of the South London Waste Plan is to identify land which is suitable for the development of potential waste management facilities within the four boroughs. This development will reduce the quantity of waste going to landfill and the climate change impacts of this.
Get involved now before it becomes policy – The South London Waste Plan is at a very early stage. No sites are proposed yet because we need to hear your views about how we should go about choosing sites. The first consultation stage is from 19th September to 31st October 2008. Your feedback will help inform the development of a draft Waste Plan. Getting involved at this early stage will ensure that you help establish the broad principles which the Waste Plan will be based on.
Local campaigners note that no technologies are mentioned, as this is a space and location definition exercise. The questionnaire does ask the public to express preferences between centralised and decentralised approaches, and whether sites should be linked to technologies. There’s an interesting question about preferring facilities with or without chimneys. Can’t think why!
There will be a community workshop on 1st October at the Braithwaite Hall (Croydon Clock Tower Complex) at 7pm. In addition to the workshop in Croydon there are 3 other public consultation meetings mentioned – in Merton, Sutton and Croydon.
