Tom Hellberg added the following to the Coventry update (below): Calorific value reduced by paper collections. Coventry incinerator posted a loss last year. PFI for increase from 165k to 400k tpa – looks like it will fail (we hope!).
Keith adds: Expression of Interest (EoI) for PFI credits were submitted in latest round. They seem to be going for 350,000 tonnes per year which is the lower end of the range indicated. They make little mention of Warwickshire double dealing and sending some to the Four ashes incinerator planned in Staffs. Capital cost of just the incinerator is £197m to be operational in 2017/8. Campaigning to oppose this is being led by Coventry FoE. Birmingham City Council has an existing EfW facility (Tyseley) which treats the majority of Birmingham’s waste. Warwickshire has had meetings with Birmingham regarding their future plans for the facility. The facility currently operates on a two-stream basis, however Birmingham are giving thought to the development of a third-stream at the facility. At the last meeting with Birmingham they indicated that they would carry out a feasibility study into the development of a third stream and then decide on their course of action. It was decided that as Birmingham had no definitive timetable for carrying out the study that there was little potential for joint working.
