Norwich (Norfolk Zero Waste Campaign): April 2008 Update

Jennifer Parkhouse (Norwich FOE) sends her apologies with the following update: Their campaign victory came about at the result of WRG’s failure to secure their preferred incinerator site (the owner wouldn’t sell), so Norfolk County Council opted for MBT to AD instead. Norfolk Environmental Waste Services, owned by the County Council, will process 150,000 tonnes per annum (tpa). But the threat of an incinerator has not gone away, and is favoured by some to handle a further 200,000 tpa. There is support to oppose these plans from District councils who signed up to the Zero Waste Charter (e.g. Norwich, with 11 Green Party Councillors), and from 2 Green County Councillors. Jennifer is looking forward to the next Zero Waste Conference – focusing on ‘Real Zero waste’ (as distinct from so-called ‘Zero Waste to Landfill’, used to justify incineration), due to be held in Chelmsford. Details to follow…
