Notes: The Stoke-on-Trent City Council Energy Strategy published in July 2023 states that: "the facility is approaching the end of its planned lifespan and is due for replacement in the next decade. This presents an opportunity to redevelop the incinerator into a more efficient energy generation facility" [Source]. It was previously reported that the existing Stoke incinerator is due to reach end of life by around 2025, with replacement under consideration with procurement due to start in 2023 to potentially be operational by 2028 [Source]. In February 2026 it was reported that Stoke-on-Trent City Council was progressing towards procuring a replacement incinerator with a capacity of 230,000 tpa - 290,000 tpa which could become operational in 2032 [Source, Source]. The plans were consuted on between May and June 2026, with Stoke Council stating: "We will carefully consider any comments we receive during the consultation period and we'll publish a Statement of Community Involvement, which will include details of how the feedback has shaped the proposals and our responses to the key points raised" [Source].
