Notes: Application for an incinerator with a nominal capacity 655ktpa and a maximum throughput of 805ktpa received by the Planning Inspectorate in November 2018 under the National Infrastructure Planning regime [See NIP website]. This facility would be next to the existing Cory incinerator. The DCO was granted in April 2020 [Source]. In August 2021 Cory Riverside held an inception meeting for their 'Cory Decarbonisation Project' to add carbon capture to Riverside 1 and 2, which would be partially built on paddocks that form part of the Crossness Nature Reserve (designated as Metropolitan Open Land), and an NSIP application is expected to be submitted to the Planning Inspectorate in Q1 2024 (see document library, see NSIP page). The project announced financial close in December 2022 [Source], and according to the operator construction began in January 2023 [Source]. In May 2024 the Environment Agency listed the facility status as "construction not started", but Cory has publicly stated that construction has started and in May 2024 a constructor stated they had completed "underground bunker and foundation piles for the new facility" [Source]. In November 2025 the Environment Agency opened a permit consultation for the proposed Cory Decarbonisation Project which is due to close on 8th January 2026 [EPR/JP3020LL/A001].
