Notes: Permit issued in September 2021 (EPR/SP3904SR). Planning application 20/01774/TIPA was granted planning permission in August 2022. Earlier planning application submitted to Doncaster Council in August 2020 for a conventional incinerator to treat C&I and/or municipal waste (ref 19/00954/CPL). In December 2020 it was reported that "BH Energy Gap (Doncaster) Ltd has applied to the Environment Agency for a permit" and that "Energy bosses said it would [use] 'advanced thermal treatment technology'" [Source]. According to the August 2020 non-technical summary for the permit application the proposal appears to be for a conventional moving grate incineration, with the "advanced" claim seemingly being a reference to what the permit application describes as the intention to "incorporate the latest advances in control and instrumentation technology" (EPR/SP3904SR/A001). The non-technical summary states that while the nominal capacity is 301ktpa the facility could potentially treat up to around 384ktpa depending on the calorific value of the feedstock [Source], and the permit lists a maximum throughput of 426,612 tpa. In July 2009 (ref 09/00246/TIPA) planning permission was issued for a "Proposed energy recovery facility involving gasification of (household and commercial) waste". A different gasification proposal on the site was approved in May 2018 (17/00923/TIPA), but in May 2019 the Council refused to issue a certificate of lawfulness to operate the site with conventional incineration technology (19/00954/CPL). ENDS reported in December 2024 that this project had yet to reach financial close [Source]. In December 2025 it was reproted that CVC DIF would be refinancing the project's debt through DIF Infrastructure VIII "and is expected to close during the fourth quarter of 2025, subject to customary closing conditions", creating a new partnership alongside MassMutual.
