Notes: Planning application submitted for RDF gasification plant in June 2016 (ref PL\1572\05 and 1/16/9005). Cumbria County Council granted planning permission in October 2016. In November 2017 it was made known that the operator wished to increase the capacity to 250ktpa and change the technology from gasification to moving grate combustion and intended to submit a Section 73 application in Early 2018. Section 73 application to vary the technology etc went live in September 2018 and was approved in January 2019 (ref 1/18/9012). A "non-material amendment" was withdrawn in September 2020, with the withdrawal letter referring to an intention "to take a view on the current design optimization process and any implications for the amendments required". Consultation on the permit application opened in July 2020 and closed 30 November 2020 (EPR/SP3609BX/A001). Carlisle City Council hired an air quality experts to "go over the [permit] application with a fine-tooth comb" [Source, EPR/SP3609BX/A001]. In April 2021 it was reported that Cumbria County Council had launched an investigation into what they describe as an "administrative error" in their handling of the variation of the planning consent [Source]. In April 2023 the Environment Agency issues a permit for the plant (EPR/SP3609BX/A001). In May 2024 the Environment Agency listed the facility status as "construction not started". In February 2025 a voluntary liquidator was appointed for Verus Energy Ltd and Verus Energy Boltzmann Project Co Limited. The environmental permit was surrendered in April 2025.
