Notes: In August 2020 proposals were announced by The Genesis Project for the incinerator [Source]. A planning application was made to Durham County Council in November 2020 (DM/20/03267/WAS). In January 2021 concerns were raised by Durham County Council's Low Carbon Economy Team about the adverse climate change impacts of the proposal. In September 2021 the Durham County Council's planning committee followed Officer advice by voting to refuse the application on the grounds of its adverse visual and heritage impact (Source). A refusal notice was issued on the 8th of September 2021. An appeal was lodged that started on 15th March 2022 (APP/X1355/W/22/3294182). It was announced in May 2022 that the appeal was being 'recovered' by the Secretary of State. Hearings took place in August 2022, and a decision is expected on or before 15th March 2023. The appeal was dismissed on the 26th of June 2023 [Source]. In February 2024 a court rejected a legal challenge to the appeal dismissal brought by Project Genesis Ltd, thus upholding the Secretary of State's refusal of planning permission [Source]. The Project Genesis reaction to losing the legal challenge appears to indicate that they have abandoned their plans for an incinerator on the site [Source]. (Entry updated 2024-04-18)
