Aspiring investigative journalist Jaikishan (Jai) Rajput has been looking into a subject near to our hearts – waste incineration. Jai, a Year 8 student at Seaford Head Community College, a specialist Science and Sports College in East Sussex, took on the challenge with determination. Over the course of about 5 hours throughout the school day on Monday 20th July 2009, Jai produced a 1,000 word report.

A skilful communicator, Jai fired off a series of challenging and engaging questions, along with probing follow-up questions, in an on-line interview with the UKWIN Coordinator.
After considering the issues from various angles, Jai concludes:
I am against the idea of putting an incinerator in Newhaven because there is no need for it. We can advertise to recycle and get more people to recycle. I am concerned because the incinerator produces many harmful chemicals which can cause death or make people ill. I believe, along with Shlomo Dowen, that incinerators are unnecessary – we simply need to recycle more effectively to make a better world.
