According to veteran environmental campaigner and UKWIN Steering Group member Dr. Max Wallis:

The [Welsh] Minister’s aspirations “Towards Zero Waste” have turned into the opposite.

The talk of “zero waste to landfill” conceals increasing waste associated with incineration. The claim in the 14 May 2010 Decision Statement that there would be “no change in direction; but [that] ambitions have been stretched” is accused of being “an exercise in spin”. Continue reading »

LetsRecycle reports that:

Plans to develop a new incinerator in Cardiff have come under fire because of concerns it will not be limited to burning non-recyclable waste. Waste firm Viridor has been selected as preferred partner by the owners of a site near the Cardiff docks to take forward the £150 million project to build a “waste management and resource recovery facility”.

According to a letter from Cardiff Friends of the Earth local people are concerned that the proposed facility would be over-sized, as 350,000 tonnes per annum equates to some 2.5 times the amount of residual waste Cardiff produces. Continue reading »

We have been faced with a Regional Waste Plan, a consortium of 5 Local Authorities set up to contract for a joint residual waste “facility”, and an emerging Welsh Waste Strategy review.

Hyder was responsible for public consultation on our Regional Plan – they just pushed incinerators in their presentation and on-line trick questionnaire. The angle they are trying is that any industrial site could be used for a waste facility. They claim 4% per yr increase in waste, ignore increased recycling and put the numbers through the WRATE black-box. Continue reading »
