Both north and south of the border we appear to be winning some and losing others

In Scotland campaigners have won a long-running victory over Grundon’s plans to build an incinerator in Perth and Kinross (and this has led to “an independent inquiry into the handling of the Grundon affair“), while Edinburgh has decided that Veolia should be excluded from Council contractsta because of the company’s involvement in Israel’s Occupation of Palestine, but sadly Viridor has been granted planning permission for their proposed 300,000 tpa incinerator at Oxwellmains, near Dunbar.

In Derby, following the spectacular victory against Resource Recovery Solutions at Sinfin (see http://ukwin.org.uk/2010/11/16/derby-inquiry-victory/), Cyclamax has now withdrawn their application for an incinerator in Spondon (see the local media’s coverage). Although the local campaign is by no means over, the fact that this gasification technology does not seem to work (in either the Isle of Wight or at Dargavel in Dumfries) may have been a factor.

Meanwhile, Oxfordshire campaigners are studying the recently-released documents that indicate that the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Eric Pickles, is “minded to” grant planning permission for Viridor’s proposed waste incinerator in Ardley.

One Response to “We win some, and…”

  1. As Chairman of S.S.A.I.N who have battled both Derby proposals I would like to thank UKWIN for their help and support. As we now know one company failed in their appeal and the other pulled out. One proposed to use ENERGOS technology and the other technology marketed in the UK by Planet Group. S.S.A.I.N now wait like a coiled spring for any new proposals while also objecting to a permit to operate a waste wood burner (including MDF) which passed planning in 2008/9.
