Even more musical contributions from the singing campaigners of Gloucestershire. In addition to this week’s festive offering of I believe in waste recycling (to the tune of I believe in Father Christmas) news has reached UKWIN of the strategic deployment of reworked Abba tunes harnessed for the anti-incineration cause.

The article entitled Campaigners hope to use music of Abba to scupper waste plant plans in Gloucestershire explains how:

In an unusual move, members of Friends of the Earth, Safety in Waste and Rubbish Disposal (SWARD), Glosain and Glosvain marched to Shire Hall to the sounds of ’70s supergroup Abba in protest – sending an SOS to county councillors in a bid to stop a waste plant being dumped on their doorstep.

I believe in waste recycling
words by David Purchase (to be sung to the tune for “I believe in Father Christmas”)

He said there’d be more re-cycling
He said there’d be less to burn
Instead it just kept on coming
Travelled waste when will they learn

I remember one Christmas morning
a burning light from the distant pyre
That choking hell and the sickly thick smell
From the waste plant the Council’s desire

I wish you a clean green Christmas
To save our planet earth
The Council will destroy us
With incineration birth

We need you all to help us
We need our plan to work
Stop the burning now, let the Council see how
The public should get it’s deserve

I hope they see sense this Christmas
I hope we can change their way
It’s now in all our interest
The Council list-ens to what we say

We need you all to help us
We need our plan to work
Stop the burning now, let the Council see how
The public should get it’s deserve
