The North Yorkshire Waste Action Group (NYWAG) has recently launched a new on-line petition, available at http://www.gopetition.co.uk/petitions/dont-incinerate-north-yorkshire/sign.html
NYWAG’s website features articles related to their campaign, including an excellent graphic depiction of Why the planned Allerton [incinerator] Facility is FAR TOO BIG
This diagram shows how proposals for an Allerton incinerator are based on incorrect assumptions about the amount of waste North Yorkshire would produce and the level of recycling that will be achieved.
The left hand bar shows the amount of municipal waste produced by NYCC and City of York each year BEFORE kerbside recycling. The second bar shows the amount of waste left if kerbside recycling is 44%, which is below the Government target of 50% and easily achievable. Ryedale are already exceeding this target. The other bars show the waste left if kerbside recycling is 50%, 60% or 70% by 2020. These numbers are corrected for predicted population growth (hashed lines). By 2020, the most likely waste to feed an Allerton Facility would be 160,000 tonnes.
According to NYAG, this means the facility would be twice as big as it needs to be.
The NYWAG website also includes a description of North Yorkshire County Council’s Incinerator plans and the reasons NYAG oppose them.
