In over 2000 pro bono presentations he has argued for five principles, or imperatives, that need to be applied in order to solve the waste crisis in an environmentally sound and economically cost effective manner. These include keeping solutions simple, local, sustainable and integrated within the local economy and its development. Planning applications have been recently submitted by large multi-national corporations to build and manage incinerators in both Shrewsbury (Battlefield) and Telford (Granville). The West Midlands currently has the biggest concentration of existing and proposed incinerators in the UK and Professor Connett’s talk is both very timely and urgently necessary when many people in the region have heard only the incinerator companies’ side of the story.
