EXCLUSIVE: Incinerator report switched

A DRAFT report recommending the rejection of a giant waste incinerator for Cornwall has been replaced at the last minute, the Western Morning News can exclusively reveal.

A draft document leaked to the WMN concerning the proposed Energy Recovery Centre in St Dennis, which was written by Cornwall County Council planning officers for a meeting set for March 19, clearly states a recommendation to refuse the application.

The Secretary of State, Hazel Blears, is understood to have written to Nottinghamshire County Council informing them of the decision to call in Veolia’s application for a 200,000 tonne per annum waste incinerator at Rainworth, near Mansfield, Nottinghamshire.

Sandwell metropolitan borough council has eliminated both WRG and Veolia from the list of bidders competing for a waste and recycling contract said to be worth £1 billion.

The Cooperative Bank does not support companies who intend to send dioxins blowing in the wind. Their Sustainability Report for 2007/08 records how on two occasions the Coop Bank refused to help fund waste incinerators on ethical grounds, foregoing an estimated £520,000.

Financial Times raises concerns about Veolia’s future

Yesterday UKWIN reported that waste company profits were falling. In an article entitled Doubts persist over Veolia’s financial health Financial Times journalist Peggy Hollinger, writing from Paris, highlights what she describes as:

the persistent doubts that hang over Veolia’s prospects and its financial strength, particularly after two profit warnings last year.
