Do you wish to support the anti-incineration groups in Cornwall?

As you may already know, there are plans to build an incinerator in St. Dennis in Cornwall.

Campaigners have been in touch with UKWIN, and have passed on the following message:

We want people to stand up and protect Cornwall and its beautiful countryside, we have until 14th March 2009 to get as many names as possible submitted to Number 10 Downing Street. Sign here.

Latest news from Cornwall:
The dates for the red balloon in St Dennis has now been moved to the 27, 28, and 29 January, because of the bad weather which is forecast for the next few days. The county councillors will visit on one of these days.

According to Stacey Mankee:

[Cornwall County Council] are making alternative plans to raise the balloon, and are proposing to reschedule the balloon raising for the following week Tuesday 27 January – Thursday 29 January inclusive (weather permitting). Transport arrangements would remain the same and we have provisionally booked transport to take Members to view the blimp (weather permitting) on Tuesday 27 January at 2.00 pm (or future Tuesdays should the event be postponed).

Other petitions you might wish to sign include:
Dr S.Prokop’s call for a public inquiry into the safety, monitoring and inspection of all incinerators in the national programme of waste incineration;
Michael Young’s call for “Regeneration not incineration” for Newhaven;
Arthur Hall’s plea for an immediate cessation of the planning, building and commissioning of household waste incinerators;
and / or Wayne McDermott’s request for support for the people of Leicestershire in the fight against the plans to site an incinerator at Bardon.

Cornish petition text:

We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to order an immediate cessation of the planning, building and commissioning of the waste incinerator at St Dennis, Cornwall. Until the health implications and safer, possibly cheaper, alternatives are fully investigated and debated by Parliament, the risk to local communities from the current type of incinerator is too great. Emissions from these incinerators are not monitored for particles smaller than 2.5 microns, which are implicated in increased incidence of a range of diseases such as asthma, heart disease, cancers, allergies and diabetes as well as rising infant mortality; additionally, the toxic fly ash by-product has to be stored in secure land fill sites, presenting further long-term risk to the environment. The present program may have huge implications for future generations, similar to those of asbestos, lead, tobacco, and DDT, all once considered safe.

    Dear Members

    Firstly, apologies for the short notice, but we have checked the weather forecast for next week and it appears that next Monday provides a potentially good day for raising the balloon to mark the height of the CERC chimney stack. We are therefore making arrangements for the fixed tethered balloon to be raised on site on Monday 26 January – Wednesday 28 January inclusive (weather permitting). We have checked Members’ diary commitments, and it seems that due to other commitments it will not be possible to arrange a site visit during the three days we are planning to raise the raise the balloon. For this reason we are not making plans for a specific tour. We would therefore recommend that Members take an opportunity to view the balloon prior to Full Council in the afternoon of Monday 26 January. However, if this is not possible, we advise Members to view the balloon on one of the alternative days that the balloon is raised.

    If you have any queries regarding this message please do not hesitate to contact me.

    Kind regards
    Stacey
