With shares in Veolia Environmental Services falling below 20 Euros senior Veolians are trying to steady investors’ nerves via an on-line broadcast. Veolia’s shares were selling for about € 65.65 a year ago, but they reached a new low of just over € 18 yesterday [falling to a new low of just over € 17.50 today, Wednesday 22nd October 2008] according to a share price tracking website. Articles have been published in both the Hull Daily Mail and the Yorkshire Post indicating that the Government is considering ‘bending the rules’ to allow PFI money to pay for WRG without going through the usual competitive tendering process. With the cost of the proposed waste incinerator having risen to £144 million Hull and East Riding Councils are desperate to renegotiate their joint contract with WRG. Responses to some of the questions about incinerator proposals that were put to waste company Veolia by Nottinghamshire County Council Planning Officers months ago have now been made available for public comment by 20th October. Local campaigners have criticised the document as misleading, incomplete and wholly unconvincing. People Against Incineration (PAIN) have also expressed alarm over the County’s growing dependence on Veolia, raising the question of how the County would deal with threats from Veolia to walk away and leave local authorities with no waste infrastructure.
