The former Director of waste management firm Biffa, Peter Jones OBE, has accepted an invitation from UKWIN to speak at our AGM in March 2009. Peter, a strong critic of Waste PFI contracts involving incineration, was recently appointed to sit on London Waste and Recycling Board by London Mayor Borris Johnson.
LetsRecycle reports that:
Peter has a track record of developing waste facilities and of financing waste infrastructure as well as having a high profile within the waste industry, sitting as a member on several government advisory bodies, such as Defra’s new technologies working group.
Peter Jones enjoys more than 20 years experience in the waste industry, and is well-known as a public communicator on the economic, technological and socio-political dimensions of the sector. He has been a member of Defra’s new technologies working group, Business Resource Efficiency and Waste (BREW) panel and formerly the DTI’s Environmental Innovation Advisory Group.
In communications with UKWIN, Peter has kindly ‘donated’ a recently-written piece on Regional Waste Infrastructure Planning – a Logical Approach for the Knowledge Bank. In it he notes:
Against this backdrop [of potentially falling gate fees, presumably] those WDAs who sign up to 30 year PFI indexed linked price escalation clauses could come seriously unstuck…The lesson for Local Authorities who have yet to decide whether to fund their own investment in these facilities is…why bother? The preconditions for the private sector to accept that risk on their own Balance Sheets are becoming more real by the week.
Other gifts from Peter Jones to UKWIN include:

Peter Jones is a good choice for next conference as very informed regarding the realistic intracacies of waste management. Shame East Sussex County Council and the Brighton and Hove City Council adopted the ‘no one else need bid’ as incineration the only option considered in the deal done, regarding the future of waste and the implimentateon of an incinerator at Newhaven; and as Biffa did not incinerate…. oh well. The lazy throw away at any cost culture is invading Britain!
Apologies for last naieve statement Biffa does now want to incinerate according to your map re: West Sussex. Ooops. We need to get rid of the BIG PLASTIC MAN who is providing this waste money making machine.
Peter Jones left Biffa before the new board decided to team up with US burner company wheelbrator. PJ championed AD, with MBT, as well as recycling and new technologies programme that looked at options other than incineration
