People concerned about the imminent threat of Climate Change will be seeking to whip up support in opposing the Newhaven incinerator plant by taking to the streets in a nine-day movement of people across the south coast towards the Climate Camp 2008 protest site.
Brighton’s ‘Stop Incineration Now!’ campaigners will embark on a planned campaign trail from 26th July – 3rd August along the south coast, followed by a Northerly route through the Downs from Brighton to Kingsnorth, in Medway, the site of this year’s Climate Camp 2008. They have made a call-out for all activists, artists, samba bands, musicians, families and “anybody opposed to incineration as an inherently flawed waste management scheme which emits high levels of greenhouse gases”, to get involved and join them on part, if not all, of the protest trail. The convoy will be made up of people walking and travelling by bike, float, bio-fuel vehicles and by public transport and camping collectively en route.
The group’s aim is to highlight their belief that “incineration poses a direct attack on public health” and to educate the public regarding specific environmental hazards associated with waste incineration. They also wish to inform the public about “radioactive waste that is been burnt in incinerators and that possibly as many as 100 are planned across the UK; dangerous 2.5 micron Dioxin particles are emitted from these Incinerators and migrate around the body, causing fatalities, a multitude of life threatening diseases…”
Anybody coming on the caravan overnight should bring lightweight camping equipment, water and some food to share. We will have a cooking collective and will have a basic supply of food, but will also find contributions helpful. If possible coming along with drums, whistles and other musical instruments would add be useful. To get involved or to learn more you can contact the group at stopincinerationownnetwork@riseup.net or turning up to the weekly meetings at The Cowley Club, London Rd, Brighton, every Monday 3-6PM.
