THE Ministry of Defence has been accused of a ‘speedy u-turn’ after withdrawing its objection to Cornwall’s planned incinerator. The MoD had opposed the plans because of the proposed 120m high chimney stack for the energy-from-waste plant at St Dennis. St Austell and Newquay parliamentary candidate Stephen Gilbert said today he had written to defence minister Des Browne for an explanation for the withdrawal of the objection. He said: “This is a bizarre and rather speedy u-turn from the MoD and, frankly, it seems a bit dodgy”.

Councillors vote for refusal
A Cornish campaigner told UKWIN: “it took five hours to get there, but the councillors who were actually permitted to take vote, voted overwhelmingly to object to the siting of an incinerator in the centre of Restormel”. Councillors agreed to oppose an incinerator in central Kernow. They decided that a public enquiry is urgently needed.Restormel planning experts have recommended the incinerator application be refused planning permission on the following grounds:

  • The site selection process failed to consider more appropriate sites that are closer to significant cities or towns;
  • The incinerator plan would harm the countryside through the loss of agricultural land and hedgerows;
  • The large size of the proposed two main buildings and chimney would blot the landscape and harm the look of St Dennis and Treviscoe.

    Chair of the Cornwall Sustainable Waste Network (CSWN) Elizabeth Hawkin, argued on BBC Radio that: “If it is dangerous for military planes to be in the vivacity of a proposed 120metre chimney at the end of the runway, then surely it is the same danger for civil air liners. They have the same sort of electronic equipment, and on board computers. Are not the public, and their safety as important as the military’s?”
