According to a BBC News report: “A group of protesters have occupied the site of a proposed incinerator in Newhaven, East Sussex”. The article continues: “Police said six people gained access to the land on Tuesday morning, and some climbed a crane.” UKWIN awaits further information about today’s protest and High Court ruling.
Indymedia UK, a network of individuals, independent and alternative media activists and organisations, “offering grassroots, non-corporate, non-commercial coverage of important social and political issues”, has also published a report on the latest developments. Their article, entitled Activists squat Newhaven incinerator site in protest explains that “Stop Incineration Now!” protesters are demonstrating “their fury now that construction [site clearance] on the highly controversial incinerator plant has begun”.
The Indymedia UK article goes on to say: “Activists have taken over the site of the proposed new incinerator plant in Newhaven. They entered the premises under the cover of darkness last night in an organised attempt at non-violent direct action, after resistance through democratic means failed them. Several protestors formed a barricade by superglue-ing themselves to the road in an attempt to prevent vehicle access, whilst on the site itself, other members of the group ‘locked-on’ to machinery in order to halt further activity. They claim to be exercising their democratic right to protest non-violently in a last-ditch attempt to promote their concerns about the consequences of incinerators on public health and safety.”
The High Court decision is expected to be announced today (Tuesday 22nd July 2008), sometime between 2 – 5 PM.
