Sheffield could become the “dustbin of South Yorkshire” if proposals to allow the city’s incinerator to burn waste from Barnsley, Doncaster and Chesterfield are approved. Sheffield Council’s contractor Veolia, which runs the city’s incinerator in Bernard Road, Hyde Park, has applied for planning permission to import 75,000 tonnes of extra waste a year from the neighbouring towns to make up for a ‘shortfall’ in household waste and operational problems encountered when Veolia tried burning too much commercial waste [see Did McDonald’s give Sheffield’s incinerator indigestion?]. THE Ministry of Defence has been accused of a ‘speedy u-turn’ after withdrawing its objection to Cornwall’s planned incinerator. The MoD had opposed the plans because of the proposed 120m high chimney stack for the energy-from-waste plant at St Dennis. St Austell and Newquay parliamentary candidate Stephen Gilbert said today he had written to defence minister Des Browne for an explanation for the withdrawal of the objection. He said: “This is a bizarre and rather speedy u-turn from the MoD and, frankly, it seems a bit dodgy”. Continue Reading “MoD’s ’speedy u-turn’ over Cornwall incinerator objection” »

Spanish-owned Waste Recycling Group (WRG) is expected to submit plans for a household waste incinerator at Sutton Courtenay to the Vale of White Horse District Council during the week commencing 21 July 2008. Oxfordshire County Council is in the process of procuring a contract for an incinerator capable of burning at least 300,000 tonnes of waste each year. A decision is due early next year as to which company will win the £100 – £200m contract, with WRG short-listed alongside Viridor. Plans to build an incinerator in Newhaven, East Sussex, will be put under the legal spotlight on Monday (21 July 2008) after the High Court granted an urgent hearing for a case filed by Lewes District Friends of the Earth.
The local Friends of the Earth group has applied for a judicial review because the planning committee which considered the proposal for the incinerator ignored long term regional recycling targets. Judicial review is the court procedure used to challenge the lawfulness of public authority decisions. Continue Reading “Newhaven Incinerator Case Reaches High Court” »
