Dear Editor,
Once again the shambles which is Wiltshire’s waste policy is exposed and the choices made by Andy Conn as Wiltshire’s Waste Manager and Toby Sturgis the political waste guru are under the spotlight.
Firstly we have the four year on/off contractual MBT plant debate for the Northacre Estate, Westbury with the elusive Ensorgia Italian company failing to deliver on promises of oversight so that the SRFcan be verified as being up to production specification.It may interest your readers to know that no official has been to see an Ensorgia plant so we can verify that this company can deliver on what they say. Talk about buying a pig in a poke.

CHAIN have been exceptionally busy over the past couple of months and have produced a new website at the same time as staging a public meeting in Middlewich.

New report from EEC Bankwatch

“In contrast to EU policy, which identifies landfill and incineration as the least favourable waste management methods, there is a massive imbalance in the European Invest Bank’s (EIB’s) waste treatment investments: out of 33 waste projects approved by the EIB between 2000-2006, 22 include incineration.

Capel in Legal Challenge of Surrey Waste Plan

Capel issues its challenge against the Surrey Waste Plan

Capel’s challenge against Surrey County Council’s adoption of the Surrey Waste Plan has been issued today (16th June 2008) in the Administrative Court, High Court of Justice, Queen’s Bench Division.

The challenge is being pursued under section 113 of the Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004, in the name of Capel Parish Council.

A Clear conflict of Interest in the Waste Framework Directive

MEP Caroline Jackson, the rapporteur for the Waste Framework Directive, is accepting money from the waste industry, it has been revealed. The new waste law would deliver several major gifts to the waste industries and has been roundly criticised by environmental groups, including Jackson’s own constituents. Meanwhile, Jackson is accepting money from Shanks plc, a waste company with a terrible record of pollution and financial interests in landfills and incinerators. Latest update from Nottingham Against Incineration and Landfill (NAIL) – the campaign to prevent the expansion of Nottingham’s Eastcroft incinerator.

Pollution Breaches
Following years of campaigning by NAIL, the industry regulator the Environment Agency (EA) has finally issued Waste Recycling Group (WRG) with an Enforcement Notice and yet another formal warning following the recent wave of pollution breaches. Is Veolia’s Sherwood Forest “done deal” coming undone?

The list of objectors to Veolia’s planning application for a 180-210,000 tonne per annum waste incinerator for Sherwood Forest’s Rainworth (near Mansfield), Nottinghamshire is growing all the time!

The Institute for Local Self-Reliance’s joint report with Eco-Cycle and the Global Anti-Incinerator Alliance (GAIA) was released on 5th June 2008, United Nations World Environment Day.

The report, Stop Trashing the Climate, provides evidence that preventing waste and expanding reuse, recycling, and composting programs – that is, aiming for zero waste – is one of the fastest, cheapest, and most effective strategies available for combating climate change.
