Defeat of the WRG incinerator (EfW) at Longwater and Kirby Bedon sites. 29/1/07
Successfully assisted SAIL setup and support against Suffolk CC 350,000tpa incinerator proposals at Great Blakenham. NAIL2 has very good ties with SAIL members.
Raising awareness of a possible Contract B 200,000tpa incinerator in Norfolk, located at Kings Lynn, with the Lynn News, EDP and Norwich Evening News raising stories.
Continued intensive campaigning with many correspondences published in the Norwich Evening News, letters lobbying MPs, Defra, County Councillors and Officers. Continued attendance of council meetings lobbying county councillors and contributing to 2 consultations for Norfolk’s residual waste Contract B.
Support for Brightgreen’s (Zero Waste social enterprise) in Norfolk, by hosting a zero waste seminar at Norwich City College in June 2007. Since then Bright-green has been successful in signing a memorandum of understanding with South Norfolk District Council to build a £7million Californian style Zero Waste Resource Recovery Park. Norfolk CC, Broadland DC and Norwich City Council also support Brightgreen’s resource recovery park ambitions.
Support and tactical assistance for other incinerator groups within the UKWIN network.
Continued positive engagement as a Stakeholder in the Norfolk Waste Partnership (NWP) that includes all Norfolk’s Waste Collection Authorities and Norfolk County Council.
Support for increased campaigning on issues of fine particles (PM2.5 and infant mortality mapping undertaken by Dr Dick van Steenis and Michael Ryan) risks and health effects, high CO2 footprints/ low energy efficiencies from incinerator facilities and promotion of advanced alternative residual technologies such as decentralised MBT+AD (AMBT), Autoclaving and AD (PGP) and Plasma Gasification or Gas plasma techologies. Continued support and promotion for Weekly Food Waste collections and Anaerobic Digestion (AD) treatments.
NAIL2 broadly supports Dr van Steenis/Michael Ryan in their PM2.5/health research and anti incinerator campaigning direction and this is NAIL2′s recommendation to UKWIN.
Support for alternative residual technologies, including the successful planning application of Strategic Resource Management’s (SRM) advanced MBT (150,000Tpa) AMBT facility proposed at Longwater Industrial estate near Norwich.
Support of Norwich City Councils £2m investment and AWC bin rollout (including plastic containers) across Norwich, with large initial increases in kerbside recycling rates. NAIL2 has also pressed the council for other zero waste initiatives such as weekly Food Waste caddy collections, plastic container banks (achieved in the city centre), battery banks and tetra paks banks; with positive interest and engagement from the City Council for the future.
Support of Norfolk CC’s PFI referencing of Anaerobic Digestion technology for contract B. Opposing Norfolk CC’s technology neutrality (incinerator ambivalent) position and vigilance of NCC’s procurement process.
